Brandon Shiller: Supporting Children’s Healthcare Through Long-Term Giving

When people think about charitable giving, they often focus on the donation itself. But for organizations supporting children and families, the real value of philanthropy can extend far beyond a single contribution. Long-term donors help create the stability needed to maintain programs, support healthcare professionals, improve facilities, and respond to changing community needs.

Brandon Shiller is among the long-term supporters of Just for Kids Foundation, an organization connected to children’s healthcare and the Montreal Children’s Hospital. His ongoing support reflects the importance of donors who continue to contribute to causes that make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.

A Foundation Built Around Children’s Healthcare

Just for Kids Foundation was established in 1987 after a group of parents became concerned about the need for updated equipment at Montreal Children’s Hospital. What started with a group of volunteers and fundraising events developed into a broader community of donors, volunteers, families, and supporters.

According to the foundation, more than $15 million has been raised over the years. Funding has supported equipment, technology, and initiatives across nearly every department of the hospital, with more than 1,500 healthcare professionals benefiting from that support.

Supporting Programs That Reach Children and Families

One example is the Heart & Hands Pediatric Clinic, which operates out of Verdun Elementary School and also serves children connected with Riverview Elementary and Rising Sun Daycare.

The clinic addresses more than routine medical needs. The available figures show that 75% of children seen there did not previously have a primary care physician, while 69% received a new diagnosis and 46% received an intervention. Ninety-six percent left with a treatment plan, including medical or mental-health-related care.

Another important initiative is the JFK Sibling Park, which provides a safe, fully subsidized space for siblings of children receiving acute care at the hospital. With trained childcare workers available, the program gives families one less concern during an already difficult period.

Why Long-Term Donors Matter

The impact of charitable giving is not always immediate or visible. Consistent support allows organizations to plan ahead, keep important programs operating, and adapt as needs evolve.

For Brandon Shiller, long-term support represents an ongoing commitment to a cause focused on children’s healthcare. Alongside other supporters, donors like Shiller help contribute to an ecosystem in which charitable organizations, healthcare professionals, families, and volunteers can work toward better outcomes for children.

Giving back is ultimately about more than a single donation. It is about continuing to support causes that matter and helping create opportunities for children and families who need them most.
